Unseen images from 1968 F2 meeting - 05/12/2011
I've just come across some previously unscanned negatives from the 1968 BARC Easter Monday Formula Two meeting held at Thruxton.
This was in the days when Grand Prix drivers regularly took part in F2 races, giving motorsport fans greater opportunity to see their heroes in action.
Big names appearing in the race included Jochen Rindt - then known as the king of F2 - Piers Courage, Jack Oliver, Derek Bell, Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Henri Pescarolo.
The new images include some particularly nice shots of Piers Courage driving Frank Williams' Brabham BT23C.
However, the most memorable happening of the day was when Jochen Rindt spun into a ditch at the chicane.
Amazingly, his Roy Winklemann Brabham BT23C emerged unscathed and Rindt went on to win the race.
Jean-Pierre Beltoise was runner-up in a Matra MS7 and Derek Bell came third in a Church Farm Racing Brabham BT23C.
As always in those days, it was a real privilege to be able to get up close and personal to the cars and photograph all the action.
