Jim Clark caught on camera - 06/02/2012

With the tiny cameras used to show in-car coverage in F1 these days, it’s interesting to look back on how it was all done in the 1960s.

Jim Clark completed a filmed lap of Oulton Park at the 1963 Gold Cup meeting with a large film camera mounted on a gantry fixed to the back of his Lotus 25.

The resulting excellent footage can be seen on YouTube.

Clark had a flag-to-flag win in the main event, setting the first lap of Oulton Park at over 100mph on the way to beating the BRMs of Richie Ginther and Graham Hill.

It was the first time a speed trap had been installed on the Knickerbrook straight, with the fastest car being Ginther's BRM at 139mph and Clark clocking 136mph.

A total of 60,000 spectators crammed into the Cheshire circuit to watch a three-race programme, seeing Dan Gurney drive his Ford Galaxie to victory in the saloon race and Roy Salvadori winning the sports car race in a Cooper Climax Monaco.
