Spotlight on 1967 BOAC 500 - 02/08/2012
This week’s Sports Car Digest uses images from the Mike Hayward Collection to illustrate a story by John Kerruish on the BOAC 500 World Sports Car Championship round which was held at Brands Hatch in 1967.
The race was won by Phil Hill and Mike Spence driving the revolutionary Chaparral 2F with rear wing.
Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon came home second in a Ferrari 330 P4, with the Jo Siffert/Chris Amon Porsche 910 in third place.
Memories came flooding back of the long drive from Shropshire to Brands Hatch in those days before the M25, and of hanging on to the fence at Druids Hairpin from six in the morning to guarantee a good view.
If I remember correctly I would have been using a Pentax Spotmatic camera with 200mm Prinzflex lens, while developing would have been carried out in the attic at home with buckets of water carried up two flights of stairs. Happy days!
